Oman is dominated by an interior of jagged mountains simply called al-Hajjar, 'the Rock'. The country is a magic tapestry of different terrains. The mountains rise straight out of the coastal plains or the sea, or soar out of the gravel plateaus and the shifting dunes in the interior.  The country ranges from the fjord-like barren majesty of the Musandam Peninsula that plunges into the Strait of Hormuz in the north, to the fertile Batinah plain that incline south-east towards Muscat, from the vast, sandy edge of the Empty Quarter through the mountains to the lush, monsoon based near-tropical Salalah plain in the south.

Oman has a distinguished geographical location, overlooking the Gulf of Oman, the Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. This has given Oman a climate that varies from one region to another during certain seasons, but is generally hot in most regions during summer. Thus, there is a dramatic temperature drop along the Omani coast, while many mountainous areas enjoy moderate temperature during this season due to their high altitude.

Dhofar is a distinctive summer destination due to its moderate climate resulting from the monsoon winds coming from the Indian Ocean, leading to rainfall and greenery all over the mountains and plains.

The Omani mountains are both majestic and breathtaking, making them superb getaways during summer. Jabal Akhdhar, ‘The Green Mountain’ and Jabal Shams, ‘The Mountain of the Sun’ - a natural extension of Jabal Akhdhar – are the best attractions during the summer.

Oman has a coast line of around 1,700 kilometers long stretching from the Hormuz Strait in the north to the Yemen border in the south. These coastal areas are rich in fish and some areas are breeding grounds of the green turtle, besides, many migratory birds which nest on the Omani beaches. Oman has many pristine and unpolluted beaches. There are several islands along the Omani coast, the largest among them being the Masirah islands lying in the Arabian Sea, the Hallaniyat archipelago in the south and the Salama islets in the north of the country.

Oman is indeed endowed with a beautiful and varied topography and climate.
